Experiences in the region
The Smiley Hotel is located in the centre of the Millstättersee region (Lake Millstatt region). It therefore offers everything you would expect from an active holiday in Carinthia in both summer and winter. Mountains and lakes, forests and nature. Sports and relaxation. Bathing and hiking. Skiing and spa treatments.
The Millstätter is known as the “jewel of Carinthia”. It has drinking water quality and is surrounded by beautiful mountains and deep green forests.
The privileged location of this region attracts sportsmen and women, families with children and pleasure-seekers alike. Water sports enthusiasts, hikers or cyclists will be in their element here, as will those seeking peace and quiet or culture enthusiasts.
Numerous offers make the Millstätterseeregion the ultimate holiday destination for families.
All kinds of water sports can be practised here. A safe cycle path leads around the lake. The panoramic hiking trail shows you all the glory of the local mountain of the Millstätterseeregion, the Goldeck.
In the Granatium in Radenthein you can marvel at the “Flintstone of Love”, the garnet stone. In Sagamundo, the house of storytelling, you can listen to Carinthian legends. You can find out how bees work on a hike along the forest and bee nature trail and at the same time climb up to the ruins of Ortenburg. Along the Krebsenwandermeile (literally: crab hiking mile) in Fresach you will gain insight into the life of the rare stone crab. At Sommeregg Castle, you will visit the eerie torture museum. In summer, there are also medieval games (jousting), juggling and medieval markets. In the bonsai museum in Seeboden you can explore the world of miniature trees. All culture seekers will be enchanted by the adventure castle Porcia and Millstatt Abbey with its abbey museum. The Protestant Cultural Centre of Friesach not only received an international architectural award for its new building but is also an exhibition venue.
Enjoy freshly caught fish at a “Dinner for Two” on the lake. Or simply enjoy a stroll around the bay and relish the picturesque view from the bench on the lake. Of course you can also do yoga on the lake.
You can experience mountain tours on the “Millstätter Höhensteig”, on the Alpen Adria Trail, by the huts on the Höhensteig and along the region’s numerous theme trails.
With the Lake Millstatt ferry line you can experience the region from the water. And on nearby Lake Millstatt, you can take the “MS Kärnten” for a baby steamboat theme tour. The steamboat is also equipped with a baby changing table and offers its young guests to try steering at their own helmstand.
The town of Spittal has a charming shopping centre, where you will find everything from bargains from the Gabor shoe factory (inexpensive women’s, children’s and men’s shoes) to quilted goods from the Goldeck company, which produces cushions, blankets and sleeping bags.
If you want to make a trip to Italy, you can reach Tarvisio in about 45 minutes by car. The town is known for its typical Italian covered market where haggling over the price is considered good manners. To reach the Upper Adriatic Sea it is about 2 hours by car. Day trips by bus to Venice are also offered.
